Megan Rapinoe Wins FIFA Women's Player of the Year

Mendi CEO Rachael Rapinoe had the honor of attending FIFA’s annual awards ceremony held in Milan, Italy yesterday. It was a whirlwind for her traveling with twin sister Megan Rapinoe for the quick trip. Megan was nominated for The Best FIFA Women’s Player 2019 award alongside USWNT co-captain Alex Morgan and England’s Lucy Bronze. Also recognized for the FIFA Women’s 11 from the USWNT were teammates Kelly O’Hara, Julie Ertz, and Rose Lavelle.

We caught up with Rachael Rapinoe on her way home to hear how the flurry of activity on the world football stage went down. Here’s what she had to say,

“…it’s truly an honor to be at the FIFA BEST awards with all the world’s best male and female footballers. It was pretty surreal sitting next to Messi, Sergio Ramos, Marcelo and other legendary players and managers. I actually had to tell German footballer and legend, Michael Ballack, to get out of my seat! Lol.

Meg wasn’t out of place, she fit right in and in fact, the press wanted more out of her than everyone else - except for Messi, of course. She is one of the most respected footballers in the world. She’s cemented herself as one of the greats, but especially off the pitch. The president of FIFA is saying things about racism and equality that have never been said before. She’s created a movement that a lot of people support and want to get behind.

I’m so proud of her. She deserves all of it.”

Megan’s acceptance speech addressed how we each need to do our part to help eliminate racism, homophobia, sexism and inequalities both on and off the field.

“I feel like that’s my ask of everybody. We have such an incredible opportunity being professional football players. We have so much success, financial and otherwise. We have incredible platforms. I ask everyone here—because I think everyone in this room probably has that crown that they're bearing—to lend your platform to other people. Lift other people up. Share your success. We have a unique opportunity in football different to any other sport in the world: To use this beautiful game to actually change the world for better. So that's my charge to everyone. I hope you take that to heart and just do something. Do anything. We have incredible power in this room.”

We couldn’t think of a more incredible board advisor, strategic partner and athlete ambassador to help launch Mendi and guide us on our journey towards building a brighter future for sports.
